St. Amand's Roman Catholic School marked the end of the Millennium year in spiritual style, by unveiling a modern crucifix.

Staff and pupils took part in a day of prayer and celebration following the blessing of the cross. The crucifix, which was made by village artist Paul Kessling, will become a focus for activities in the school's hall.

School governor Jacqueline Newell said:

"At the beginning of the year we decided we wanted to have a Millennium project and do something for the school. We are a Catholic school but until now we did not have a crucifix, which seemed fairly important. The artist had a free hand but because it is the Millennium we wanted something new. The first time we saw it was when it was hung up. It is very modern and exciting."
