Saturday Jan. 12th 2000 saw the Hendred Heritage 'Now & Then' evening with a slide presentation on Hendred in the early 1900's by John Sharp, with help from John Stevenson, Robin Hine and Stan Francis. Queen Victoria was still on the throne in 1900, and Britain still had an Empire. At the local level, surprisingly some parts of the village have changed very little, as shown by photographs of the village at that time. There were then 8 shops, 3 pubs (the same ones) and many village businesses from blacksmiths, bakers, carpenters - a self sufficient village, with most travel on foot or by horse drawn vehicles (no cars, until several years later!!). On the same evening Ron Foster showed his latest audio-visual presentation on the history of Hendred House, and the Eyston family, over five centuries. |
